Carbon standard for furling masts

As the size of sailboats has grown, so has the need for an easier handling of sails. The in-boom furling systems have proven to be more affordable and less complicated than the in-mast furling systems. Not only that, but they also allow a better shape of sails with more roach than the in-mast furling systems. One can even use full-length battens to get an even more controllable shape of their sails.

The other advantage that in-boom furling systems have over the in-mast furling systems is the fact that there is no need for reefing lines, which reduces the clutter in the cockpit and simplifies the use of the mainsail. Probably one of the main selling points of in-boom furling systems would be the possibility to install it without changing the entire spar setup.

There is also a major safety advantage they have – in case the mainsail gets jammed, one does not need to go aloft mid-sailing to free the sail. In case you are not able to free the sail, you can just drop it as you would drop a normal mainsail, and furl it on the outside of the boom until you get to a safe port.
